Property Description

An amazing Grade II listed country house, set amongst the beautiful and peaceful countryside of South West Scotland.

Kirroughtree Country House is situated in 8 acres of grounds and is steeped in history and old world splendour. An ideal house for special occasions, meetings of old friends and family get-togethers. The house also has a lift to both the first and second floors for disabled access. Originally the family seat of the Heron family, dating to the 14th century, this majestic country house is a Grade ll listed building and has seen many famous guests including Robert Burns, who famously recited poetry at the base of the main staircase, and James Boswell, the famous Scottish biographer. Once a hotel, Kirroughtree Country House was used as a retreat by the rich and famous. Any special requirements can be arranged, from catering and housekeeping to laundry services, available by prior arrangement with the owners.
Kirroughtree Country House is situated in the Galloway Forest Park, Britain’s largest forest park, with three hundred square miles of wild beauty waiting to be explored. The park boasts tranquil valleys, rugged rock faces, forest, moorland, lochs and ancient woodland with a huge diversity of wildlife, including red and roe deer, wild goats and many birds of prey. The park has also been awarded the status of one of only four “Dark Sky Parks” in the western world and when the sun sets, enthusiasts come to wonder at the universe revealed above. Dalmellington at the far end of the park is home to the Scottish Dark Observatory.
For the outdoor enthusiast Galloway offers hill walking, mountain biking and water sports, with many renowned gardens and ancient woodland to explore with a chance to glimpse the abundant wildlife.
Castle Douglas, the food town, Gatehouse of Fleet and Kirkcudbright, the artists’ town, are all within a short drive. Gatehouse of Fleet offers a wider range of places to eat and drink, and there are many attractions in and around the town including the ‘Mill on the Fleet’ Visitor Centre, Cardoness Castle and the popular Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre, which is host to one of Europe’s longest zip wires. Kirkcudbright attracts visitors throughout the year drawn by the harbour, the historic high street and the diverse range of annual events and visitor attractions. The popular programme of summer festivities culminates with the spectacular Tattoo, an event not to be missed. Beach 18 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
