Villa Mako rests in the traditional village of Tiyingtukul – a rural area defined by rice fields and a river, about four kilometers from the beach. There are a few other luxury rental villas in the village, but no restaurants or shops, apart from one or two small warungs (local eateries) selling basics such as coffee and noodles. At the bottom of the villa garden is a river and a holy spring, where offerings to the gods are made by the villagers. Eighty metres along the riverbank is the village temple. Guests at Villa Mako will be welcomed at temple festivals, and some may even be lucky enough to witness a barong dance or other Hindu ceremony.
