Property Description
The Old Coach House, built in 1879, was once the coach house and stables to Four Gables. The large windows and doors in the open plan living/dining room were formerly the entryway, and the original mounting block still stands outside (doubling as the date stone). Whilst the renovations, give this home a contemporary feel, it still retains many original features from the coach house and stables. The living spaces have been carefully designed to complement the character of the property with a large open plan footprint providing a fantastic sociable space ideal for entertaining friends and family while on your holiday. Living space is certainly not something you will be short of in this house, as in addition to the main area there is a snug with wood burner providing a cosy, peaceful space ready to be enjoyed with a good book, or if you are feeling more playful, why not head for the games room with pool table and retro games console as well as a selection of toys and games suitable for younger children. The three downstairs bedrooms each have an en-suite and the two upstairs bedrooms share a Jack and Jill house bathroom. The private deck and garden is a haven for those seeking a quiet spot to relax and the extensive gardens and woodland provide an achingly beautiful setting in which to relax and unwind.
In the surrounding area there is an abundance of activities for all ages and abilities from shooting and fishing, cycling and walking to city shopping and museum hopping. You can abandon the car during your stay as the handsome market town of Brampton is just a short walk away along a pavement making it easily accessible for prams and wheelchairs. Here you can find award winning butchers, deli and quality restaurants. You can also see another example of Philip Webb’s work in the impressive St Martin’s Church in the centre of Brampton. The windows of the church were made in the William Morris workshop by another grandee of the Arts and Crafts movement, Edwin Byrne-Jones. For history lovers, it is just 9 miles to Carlisle, the great border city which is home to the most besieged castle in the country, an impressive cathedral and fantastic museum, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. You can also follow in the footsteps of the Romans by walking Hadrian’s Wall. There is a pleasant walk of just a couple of miles to Lanercost Priory, home to Augustinian Canons in the 1100s, now ruined but just as beautiful. It also has a fabulous tea room to refresh yourself before you head back to the comfort of the cottages. Talkin Tarn, 2 miles, has a lovely off road walking route where you can stroll around the lake stopping off at the restaurant/cafe for refreshments, or why not try out some of the on water activities? For music lovers, each June is the Stepping Stones Festival, a weekend of good music in the beautiful grounds of Kirklinton Hall close by. A few weeks later, Kirklinton Hall also plays host to the opera. Nearby, the village of Castle Carrock holds Cumbria’s most friendly musical event, Music on the Marr.
